When You Have No Clue What People Are Talking About

Today’s topic was chosen as “the rap beef between 2pac and the notorious B.I.G.” by Chris D at UT Austin; however, as a non-follower of pop music, I have absolutely NO IDEA what that is. Yeah, I know, this is quite ironic. So today’s topic is instead, “When you have no clue what people are talking about.”

It goes typically like this:

[Normal conversation so far…]

Someone: [A reference to some random line of lyrics.]

Me: What?!

Someone: Oh, that’s from [insert song here].

Me: I don’t know that song.

Someone: You know [insert artist of that song here]?

Me: No.

Someone: Oh.

Me: I don’t listen to music.

It usually happens when I’m with a group of people. It’s the most awkward in a group of three, because two people can start conversing about the song while the other person, typically me, is not contributing. In this kind of situation, the “other” person really needs to try to change the subject in some reasonable manner.

Oh great, this train of thought is heading back into (micro-)sociology. And I don’t want to bore you with that.

In the comments, you should share your awkward conversation moments when you have no clue what people are talking about. Let’s see what you come up with!

  1. Person A: You, Person B, magic, when? Monday? Wednesday?
Person B: Uh, Monday? What about you Person C?
    Person C: Time?
Person A: Okay, Persons B and C prefer Monday.
Person C: Wait what? I refuse to return to my dark past.
Person B: You used to play?
    Person C: Yeah. Didn’t you?
Person B: Nope, I have no idea.

And the conversation continues to proceed as sampled. Note that there are four people at the table.
